Hey Folks!
Finally got my video done. Here is the problem. I had a bit of an agenda the whole time, as some of you might already know. This sequel has been a long awaited goal of mine, so the opportunity to do it during this class was perfect. Since I had a personal agenda, I made a version that is probably copyright infringed (not to be distributed, etc). Here it is:
I also made a version that teachers could use (at this point, in my building as it is still not good in a copyright sense). The only difference between the two is that there is no gag reel at the end... This will be very much like the version I submit and show at the premiere since it is already over 15 minutes long, you all don't need to see another 4 minutes of my friends being idiots :). My submission will also need to have the copyright issue dealt with, so my brother in law is making similar songs to the ones I used in these two versions that I will use in my submission... it makes me sad though, because it is the music during my volleyball scene that inspired the whole production...

Scene
1 – The Intro
Takes
place in a hospital. Title screen, intro
credits, while the audience hears a woman giving birth.
Cut
to Zombie Girl in a hospital bed with a blanket over her knees as she is giving
birth. Frankenstein is by her side,
holding her hand. Doctor is at the foot
of the bed, getting ready to catch the baby.
Doctor: PUSH!!!
Zombie
Girl: AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
Camera
Freezes on Frankenstein’s surprised face.
The following dialogue is voiced over as a narration.
Frankenstein: That’s me…
Frankenstein. And this is the happiest
day of my whole life…
Camera
freezes on Zombie Girl’s strained face then rotates through each of the doctors
and lands on a new born baby at the very end.
Frankenstein: And that’s my wife, Zombie
Girl. It’s funny that I ended up with
her. I mean I know that she is a zombie,
and I am a human... my friends thought she was gorgeous growing up, but not me…
Funny how things change. Growing up, I
had a bit of an identity crisis, never knowing if I fit in at all… I promised I
would not let that happen to my child… or monster… or whatever we have. Where was I?
Oh right… The happiest day of my
life.
Cut
to the title screen “The Halloweiners II – Son of Frankenstein”
Cut
back into an obvious home movie of young Son of Frankenstein at his first birthday
party. Frankenstein is still narrating.
Frankenstein: We live in a strange
world. All new born babies seem
human. It is not until the baby turns 1
that the monster gene will show itself.
I remember this day like it was yesterday.
Video
shows a toddler Son of Frankenstein at a table with a birthday cake. Cut to Son of Frankenstein’s neck as neck
bolts pop out. Other guests at the party
run away.
Frankenstein: Just look at those scared
little humans run away. Oh how the time
flies.
Scene
2 – Before School
As
music fades out, a title shows “October 30st, 16 years later…
moments before Halloween”.
Transition to alarm clock - 11:59 turns
to 12:00. An alarm goes off - monster
mash. A hand immediately comes down and
turns the alarm off.
Cut to Frankenstein standing in front of
a calendar with X’s through all of the days but October 31, which is circled.
Frankenstein walks out of frame.
Cut
to Frankenstein and Zombie Girl are having breakfast (toast and coffee for
Frankenstein, brains for Zombie Girl).
Frankenstein: I just don’t get it. I know that we promised Son of Frankenstein
whatever he wanted for his sweet sweet 16, but are you sure this is what’s
best?
Zombie
Girl: (moans)
Frankenstein: Maybe you’re right. I’m sure he will be just fine. I have always encouraged Son of Frankenstein
to be himself. And he is proud of who he
is… I just hope that playing volleyball doesn’t make him reject his
monstrosity.
Zombie
Girl: (moans)
Frankenstein: Fine, I won’t put things in
his head… Just eat your brains.
Son
of Frankenstein comes to the table and sits down. There is an awkward moment between father and
son.
Frankenstein: Are you ready for your first
day of school at the Academy of Co-Species Youth?
Son
of Frankenstein:
Yes.
Frankenstein: I hope you can find a
volleyball team today.
Son
of Frankenstein:
I hope so too. Their Co-Species
intramurals start today. That is part of
the reason I chose this school.
Frankenstein: Right. Son, you know that since they have Co-Species
teams at this school, each team will need two monsters on the court at all
time?
Son
of Frankenstein:
Yes. I know that. I want to play
middle.
Frankenstein: And… you know that monsters
typically play power right?
Zombie
Girl: (moan)
Son
of Frankenstein:
No Mom! It’s ok! Dad just doesn’t believe I can do it!
Frankenstein: … Son, you know that’s not
true. I have just been in your shoes
before. It is difficult going to school
with other species. It is tough to fit
in.
Son
of Frankenstein:
This is my dreaaaam! I just want
to play volleyball! I want to be a
middle!
Frankenstein: Oh no! We better get going, or I will be late for
work!
Frankenstein
and Son of Frankenstein leave.
(fade
out)
Scene
3 - Arrives at School
Frankenstein and Son of Frankenstein
walk through the front doors of the school.
Camera captures a sign to the side of the door: Academy of Co-Species
Youth. Co-Species Intramural Volleyball
Today!
They walk up to Mrs. Jekyll, who greets them.
Mrs. Jekyll: Good evening Mr.
Stein.
Frankenstein: Good evening Mrs. Jekyll.
Mrs. Jekyll: And you must be Son of Frankenstein!
Son of Frankenstein: Yes.
Mrs. Jekyll: Welcome to our
Academy for Co-Species Youth. Class
starts in about ten minutes. I will
introduce you to some of your class mates.
Mrs. Jekyll and Frankenstein walk
towards a group of students. The group consists of two monsters - Son of
Dracula and Zombie Kid. Son of Dracula
and Frank exchange a look.
Frankenstein: Excuse me, are
you Son of Dracula?
Dracula: Yes,
do you know my father?
Frankenstein: Yes I do. We grew up together. I remember the day he finally grew his
fangs! You look just like him… although
you look a little thinner.
Dracula:
Well, I do not have quite the appetite as my
father.
Frankenstein: Well son, I need to get to
work. I was late yesterday, so now my
boss thinks I am a tard.
Mrs. Jekyll: Well Mr. Stein, I
will be your son’s volleyball coach. If
you want to come and watch the game, it will start after the monsters feed.
Frankenstein and Son of Frankenstein
hug, then Frankenstein leaves.
Mrs. Jekyll: Listen up you
little monsters. This here is Son of
Frankenstein, please show him around. He
will be playing volleyball with you today against The Angry Mob.
Mrs. Jekyll leaves.
Dracula:
Hi Son of Frankenstein, I am Son of
Dracula. This is Zombie Kid.
Zombie Kid: I
like turtles.
Dracula:
He likes turtles.
Zombie Kid: I like turtles.
Son of Frankenstein: I know.
Dracula: What brings you to our academy?
Son of Frankenstein: This is the only Co-Species
school in the area. Since my mother is a
monster and my father is a human I want to be around both while I grow up.
Cut to a classroom where the
conversation is continuing while Mrs.
Jekyll teaches a cooking class for monsters.
Dracula:
And Mrs.
Jekyll said you want to play volleyball?
Son of Frankenstein: Yes.
Dracula and Zombie Kid exchange a look. Zombie Kid puts his hand
on Son of Frankenstein’s shoulder.
Zombie Kid: I like turtles.
Son of Frankenstein: I don’t
understand.
Cut to Mrs. Jekyll. There is a picture of a human on a
rotisserie.
Mrs. Jekyll: And then the heat
goes in the skin. But remember that you
can not eat humans at school. Truck
to another diagram of a zombie eating a human with a big X through it. That would break the code of trust we
have with them. We don’t eat them and
they don’t form mobs to hunt us down.
Cut back.
Dracula:
Well… we already have two monsters on our
team. To play Co-Species volleyball you
need to have a minimum of two monsters on the court. All the teams already have two monsters. On my team, that’s me and Zombie Kid. And we play power because that’s all monsters
are good for: smashing balls!
Son of Frankenstein: I play middle.
Dracula and Zombie kid burst out
laughing.
Zombie Kid: I like turtles.
Dracula:
Ya, you clearly don’t move fast enough for
middle… Look, you can play with us but you will probably be on the bench most
of the time.
Shot of click while bell rings.
The monsters walk out of class and turn
down the hall. Zombie Kid and Dracula
stop abruptly, Son of Frankenstein runs into them.
Long shot down the hallway. Three (students are walking down the hallway,
pushing people as they go. They
eventually walk up to Dracula, Zombie Kid, and Son of Frankenstein.
Dracula:
Here comes bad company.
Shelley:
Well if it isn’t the Monster Smash. You are going down today!
Shot of Son of Frankenstein
Zombie Kid: I like turtles.
Dracula:
We are playing them in volleyball today.
Shelley:
Oh who is this?
In this same shot, Pinky
disappears. Cut to Frankenstein, Pinky
re-appears right beside him.
Frankenstein jumps.
Pinky:
Looks like a monster.
Shelley:
You already have two monsters. Idiots.
Wolf Girl slaps the books out of
Dracula’s hands.
Wolf Girl: Ya you
stupid. Why would you have more than two
monsters?
Zombie Kid: (aggressively) I like turtles! (Wolf
Girl and Zombie Kid are not inches from each other)
Dracula:
(Stepping between them) Son of Frankenstein is new and wants to play volleyball.
Shelley:
You monsters are about as clueless as these
two! (Pulls her goonies back behind her).
Shelley walks up to Son of Frankenstein.
Shelley:
You don’t scare me Son of Frankenstein. We are going to rip your faces off and eat
them… well they will, not me. That’s
sick.
Swish pan to Ms. Moto standing in a
classroom doorway.
Ms. Moto: Yes that’s right monsters. My team will rip your face off.
The
Angry Mob goes over and stands by Moto.
Son of Frankenstein: You can’t talk
like that. You are a teacher.
All three of the bad team approach
Frankenstein.
Shelley:
Watch your mouth beast.
Pinky/Wolf Girl: Ya watch your mouth.
Mrs. Jekyll comes out of her room.
Mrs. Jekyll: What is going on
here?
Ms. Moto: Your filthy
monsters are bullying my team. Isn’t it
time to feed your hellions?
Mrs.
Jekyll shakes her
head as the other team walks away.
Dracula:
We will never beat them…
Team looks sad. Fade out.
Scene 4 - Volleyball Game
A wide shot of the gym. Both teams are huddled
Mrs. Jekyll:
Alright team. Lets go out there and have
some fun. This team is tough, but I
think we can beat them!
Dracula: Ya
right…
Mrs. Jekyll: Here is the line
up (shows a slip of paper).
Son of Frankenstein: I don’t get to
play?
Mrs. Jekyll: We are only putting two monsters on the court
at a time if we want to win… Now lets
go!
Team puts their hands in and they cheer.
Right before the game starts, Frankenstein
enters the gym and sits in the bleachers.
His and Son of Frankenstein’s eyes meet.
Son of Frankenstein is sad that he is on the bench.
Ref begins the game. The Angry
Mob starts
off strong. There will be a lot of wide
shots of the game. There will be many
cuts to the score clock. There will be a
lot of medium and close ups of hits and blocks as well.
There will be a few hits from Pinky
where Pinky appears in mid air and hit’s the ball as a special effect.
The score will eventually reach 22 -
5. At this point, the human playing
middle for the Monster Smash
will try to block Wolf Girl. This will
tear the limbs off and the game will stop for a moment. Mrs. Jekyll runs onto the court to tend to
the horrific injury.
Cut away to Son of Frankenstein as he
will realize he will get to play (as he is the only player on the bench).
Ref:
(approaches Mrs. Jekyll) Mrs. Jekyll, you need to put a new player on the
court.
Mrs. Jekyll:
… but we only have Son of Frankenstein on the bench… he can’t play middle!
Ref: ya… but…
Mrs. Jekyll: … just give us a few minutes and we will fix this human up.
Ref: (looks
at human) you will need to put that monster in.
Slow motion arguing ensues. Cut back to Frankenstein. Cut to The Angry Mob as they snicker with the coach. Cut to Frankenstein.
Eventually, Son of Frankenstein stands
up from the bench and walks onto the court.
A slow motion truck shot will occur as he walks along the net. The Angry
Mob will be yelling at him through the net.
Son of Frankenstein will eventually get
to Mrs. Jekyll and the ref.
Son of Frankenstein: I will play.
Mrs. Jekyll: Ok… I guess we have no other option… Three monsters on the
court. Good thing they can only score
two more points and this game is over. (she slumps off the court)
Zombie Kid and Dracula surround Son of
Frankenstein for support.
Dracula: Alright
Son of Frankenstein. We can do
this! Just try to move as fast as you
can. Get the ball to the outside and we
will try to stuff it down their throats.
Zombie Kid: I like turtles.
Son of Frankenstein: … right.
Cut to Ms. Moto talking to her team.
Ms. Moto: Shelley, make sure you set up our monsters so
they are hitting against that lanky monster in the middle.
Shelley: You got it coach.
Pinky/Wolf Girl: Ya you got it coach.
Shelley: Oh
shut it.
Cut to The Angry Mob serving.
Ref blows whistle to start the game up again.
Shelley sets monsters to the outside,
but Frankenstein starts blocking everything.
After about 3 blocks, Ms. Moto starts
getting frustrated and starts yelling to get the hits through the blocks. The Angry
Mob’s set ups get sloppier and sloppier and it is harder and harder for Shelley
to set up her monsters. Zombie Kid and
Dracula also start hitting really good as they feed off of Son of
Frankenstein’s surprising skill.
The last play of the game will be a
smash from Wolf Girl who gets stuffed.
The good team celebrates.
The Monster Smash huddle together and jump up and down and act like
giggly school girls. Ms. Moto drops to
her knees and screams in frustration. Shelley
is pounding the ground. Wolf girl and Pinky
are standing looking at the team celebrate.
Pinky:
I have always wanted to set…
Wolf Girl: I have always wanted to play middle…
Dracula: Son
of Frankenstein, that was awesome!
Zombie Kid: I
like… TURTLES!
Frankenstein goes on to the court to
meet Son of Frankenstein.
Son of Frankenstein: I knew I could do
it dad.
Frankenstein: So did I
son. So did I.
The team lifts Son of Frankenstein
up. Fade out.
Credits and bloopers.

Assignment 3 - Treatment
Treatment of The
Halloweiners II: Son of Frankenstein
By Aaron Biberdorf
The
goal of this project is to continue the plot of my first video project, The Halloweiners. The sequel to this project is called The Halloweiners II: Son of Frankenstein. Where part one of the series dealt with
themes of identity, this project will address the theme of overcoming
stereotypes and expected roles in society.
After watching this video, the viewer should be able to make a
connection as to how genders, races, and possibly even religions have certain
skill sets and are then expected to use those skill sets without deviation, in the eyes of our
society. The targeted audience will be
students or teachers covering this theme in their social studies or English courses.
The Halloweiners saw ‘Frankenstein’
reveal that he was actually a real boy that dressed up like his monstrous
friends to fit in (identity crisis). In The Halloweiners II, this man, who will now go by Frank, will have
a child that turns out to be a true monster (the actual Frankenstein monster, known as 'Frankenstein'... even though the classic monster is nameless...). Frankenstein attends school and plays on a
co-species volleyball team. The rule for
co-species teams is that there must be at least two monsters on the court at
one time (much like co-ed volleyball teams).
Furthermore, when monsters are on the court, they typically play in the
power position as they are much stronger and can hit harder than humans, in
general. This parallels how girls on a
co-ed team generally play setter as they are shorter and usually can’t jump
higher than the net to block or hit (in general of course). As Frankenstein is a slower moving monster,
he is usually on the sidelines and rarely gets to play (there are only 7 team
members). During the game, a human
playing middle will get injured, forcing Frankenstein to come in to play. At this time, Frankenstein will dominate the
court as he is very tall and surprises everyone.
This
video will be shot at my house in Kenaston as well as the Kenaston School
Gym. Since my cast will consist of both
monstrous and human characters, I will need a variety of costumes. The Kenaston Dinner Theatre group has a wide
array of wardrobes at my disposal. The
school also has access to production lights which I will borrow.
There
will be some serious challenges with this project. First, I only have one weekend I can shoot as
that is when my talent is all available.
Therefore, the bulk of the video will be produced on May 31 and June 1
of 2013. I will also have some lighting
out of my control. For example, I will
be forced to use the lights in the gym, and since I will be doing a lot of wide
angle shots of the volleyball game I will not have an opportunity to use extra
lighting to get rid of shadows. However,
it will look natural as the setting is a gym.
Since I will be taking shots from a distance away from the game I am
expecting audio to be an issue. I am
hoping to get my hands on a Zoom mic so I can set it near the court and relay
that audio back to the camera (using a wireless mic), or lay that sound picked
up by the Zoom over the sound from the camera during editing. One other subtle problem will be having my
friends as the talent. They have all
seen The Halloweiners and are very
invested in it. I will need to have a
clear direction and stick with my gut instincts as they will want to have some
input in the process. Finally, I am
going to need to decide if I want to go with black and white footage like I did
in the original project. Since I will be
using a lot of make-up, the black and white footage will allow me to get away
with a few blemishes and imperfections.
At the same time, I want to be able to work on my understanding of
lighting, make-up, etc. By shooting this
project in color, it will separate from the original (which is not a bad
thing). If I decide to go with black and
white, I will do this during post production so I don’t pigeon hole myself.
